BWL – Specialization Accounting & Controlling: Career Paths
Counting peas was yesterday: Those who work in Accounting & Controlling today are no longer just suppliers of figures, but are also active in an advisory capacity and provide suitable suggestions for solutions in the event of potential problems in the company. After graduation, you will work, for example, as a...

ACCOUNTANT
As an accountant, you work in the accounting department of companies or banks. You not only prepare invoices and check incoming payments, but also document financial data and assets. You advise the management on financial matters and help to increase the success of the business. Unlike controlling, however, accounting is not about optimising costs, but about documenting real bookings and values. In large companies, a distinction is made between external or financial accounting and internal or payroll accounting.

BUSINESS CONTROLLER
The fiercer competition between companies increases the pressure on costs - therefore, it is all the more important to recognise where money is being earned or burnt. As a business controller, you try to find out how to improve the company's performance. Therefore, your tasks include evaluation of data, comparison of planned and actual figures and preparation of budgets and forecasts, i.e. "look into the future". You work closely with other departments and the management and advise on how to achieve the company's goals.

PRODUCTION CONTROLLER
Especially in a technical environment, controllers fulfil their modern role as advisors to management. This is because thinking and acting in terms of business administration, especially finance, is often not at the forefront in production, given the numerous technical issues. As a controller in a technical environment, you must always be aware of the specific features that characterise a technical operation. In other words, you must be prepared to engage yourself in the way of thinking and acting in technology and deal with technical problems.
