A job change here, a move there, a wedding or family planning: life can be so full of diversity that it is hard to plan firmly for years to come. To make sure that our degree programme still suits you, we have designed it to be as flexible as possible and offer you the possibility to extend your studies beyond the standard period of study free of charge. 

To what extent can I prolong my studies? 
If the standard study period is not sufficient, you can extend it by further 12 months free of charge. 

Are there additional fees for an extension?  
No, IU International University of Applied Sciences offers you the possibility to extend your studies free of charge for the above-mentioned period. 

Can I continue my studies even after the free extension has expired? 
Yes, of course, you can. After the free extension, you have the option of continuing your studies at a reduced monthly rate of 80% of the regular tuition fee. 

Especially when time and money are limited, the possibility of a free break semester often comes in handy. If you need some time off, you can take a temporary break from your studies and continue them at a later date. Your tuition fees will be on pause during this period. Here, too, you decide for yourself which path you would like to take. We are always there to support you so that you can study without any compromises. 

When can I apply for a leave of absence or an exeat? 

In principle, leave of absence or exeat is only possible from the second semester onwards. In the first semester, you can only apply for a leave of absence or an exeat if the cause for the leave occurred after enrolment and was not foreseeable for you beforehand. You can find the application for a free break semester in the Care study portal under Application Management. 

What should I keep in mind when applying for a break semester?  

The period for which you apply for a break semester must cover a complete semester of 6 months and the application shall be received by us no later than two weeks before the desired start. You can complete and upload the application in the Student Portal Care under Study/Application Management. Please note that the study contract cannot be terminated during your break semester. 

How often can I apply for a break semester?  

You can only apply for a break semester for one semester at a time. You can apply for leave of absence/exeat several times, but not for more than half of your chosen standard study period. In some individual cases, the upper limit can be extended, however there must be an important reason for the extension. 

Can I write exams during the break semester?  

You cannot write any exams during your break semester. Your access to myCampus will be disabled for this period. Course registrations are therefore not possible. Your studies will be paused, so to speak. 

Can I end my break semester prematurely? 
The break semester lasts for 6 months and cannot be terminated prematurely. You cannot resume your studies during this time. The duration of the requested break semester must be respected. 

The opportunities are favourable: depending on the IU study model you choose, you will receive a discount of up to 10% if you pay your entire tuition fees in advance. The 15% discount and discounts of up to 2,000 euros are available to alumni of IU International University.

What do I have to do to receive a discount on my tuition fees?

You can easily apply for the discount during your online application under the menu item "Payment method".

What discounts are available for members of the German Armed Forces?

• 1,555 € discount for active and former soldiers: Further information on the offer and the required voucher code can be obtained from the relevant career development service.
