Child benefit during the dual study programme
Child benefit is generally paid for all children until they reach the age of 18. Once a child reaches the age of majority (from their 18th birthday), child benefit will only continue to be paid under certain conditions up to the age of 21 or 25. After that, only children with disabilities receive child benefit. However, very few people realise that this entitlement can be claimed if necessary. For this reason, we take a closer look at child benefit during the dual study programme.
Am I entitled to child benefit during the dual study programme?
Even if you may earn a monthly salary during your dual study programme and your practice partner may pay your tuition fees, you are still entitled to child benefit as a dual student if all requirements are met. As long as a child is being trained for a profession, child benefit can be paid until they reach the age of 25. Your parents or legal guardians must submit the application for child benefit to the family benefits office in writing. If they miss this deadline, it's not too bad - child benefit can be paid retrospectively, but only for the last six calendar months before the family benefits office receives the child benefit application.
If the dual study programme is your second course of training and you work up to 20 hours a week, you can also receive child benefit if the requirements are met.

How much child benefit am I entitled to during the dual study programme?
As a rule, beneficiaries receive an amount of 250 euros per month per child for children who fulfil all the requirements for support. There are no longer different amounts depending on the number of children. If you or the beneficiaries have already received or applied for child benefit, you no longer need to submit a new application. State child benefit is usually paid to one parent. Under certain conditions, child benefit can be paid directly to the child (i.e. you) on application. You can find out about the conditions from the family benefits office.

Which certificates are required during the dual study programme?
Every year, proof must be provided by October at the latest that the dual study programme will continue. Each completed semester must be documented, for example with enrolment certificates.
If your dual study programme has to be interrupted for a temporary period due to illness, child benefit will generally continue to be paid. However, this only happens if the doctor certifies the expected end of the illness. If it is a long-term illness (expected to last more than four weeks), the family benefits office must be informed immediately.

Will I continue to receive child benefit in the period between finishing school and starting university?
There are often forced breaks between two training programmes, for example because there are a few weeks or months "free" between finishing school and starting your dual study programme. During such a transitional period, child benefit will continue to be paid for up to four months if you actually start your studies after four months at the latest.
Your entitlement to child benefit after the dual study programme
As a general rule, you should inform the Family Benefits Office immediately if you have completed your studies and take up gainful employment, change, end, discontinue or interrupt your studies. The Family Benefits Office will check whether the change affects your entitlement to child benefit. If you discontinue your studies, you must send the certificate of exmatriculation to the family benefits office immediately. When you complete your studies, the family benefits office requires a copy of your examination certificate, whereby the assessments and grades contained therein can be made unrecognisable.
