Can I deduct my dual study programme from my taxes?

Since you will receive a regular salary as a dual student, depending on the industry and practice partner, there are a number of tax aspects to consider. However, your tax return is not only about your income, but also about the fact that you are still in training. Some of the costs incurred as a result can usually be taken into account in your tax return and you may be able to reclaim some of them. Find out how this works and what you need to bear in mind.

Dual study programme tax return - you can deduct these costs

A tax return could be really worthwhile for you! You can declare the following expenses in your tax return to reduce your taxable income:

  • Work equipment and work clothes: This applies to clothing that you have to buy specifically for your work at the practice partner, such as lab coats for chemistry labs, general work protection or uniforms.

  • Contributions to trade unions or professional organisations and professional insurance

  • Interest on the education loan: The education loan programme is another option for financing your studies that is available in addition to BAföG. Here you can deduct the interest on your debt. This also applies if you only start to repay the loan after you graduate.

  • Office supplies and specialist literature

  • Double housekeeping: If you live in a flat at your place of study and continue to use your room with your parents with appropriate cost sharing, you can claim income-related expenses for double housekeeping.

  • Rent and accommodation costs as well as relocation costs

  • Travel costs due to work trips and additional meal expenses: If your practice partner has not paid the costs for accommodation and meals, you can deduct these from your taxes.

  • Account management fees

  • Semester tickets
